Coaching is one of the most rewarding things that I could imagine doing. I have had the privilege of helping people from all walks of life, from hobbyists to professional fighters make dramatic changes in both their bodies and their minds. It is a long, sometimes frustrating, journey and not easy at times however if you can deal with all the challenges that this true martial art will throw at you, it will change your life for the better. It has with mine and I am extremely fortunate to have had the opportunity to help others along the way.

Owner and Head Coach John Donehue has been training in martial arts for over 35 years and is still travelling the world searching for new and innovative ways to enhance our curriculum to provide the best programs available to our students and clients. We also work closely with professional sporting organisations in both the AFL and NRL including the Melbourne Storm (NRL) and North Melbourne Football Club (AFL).

Head Coach John Donehue hails originally from a boxing and kickboxing background, but that all changed when, on a training trip in the United States, World Champion kick boxer Bill “Super foot” Wallace introduced John to Gene LeBell’s World of Judo and Grappling. That’s where the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu story began for John, who competed on the Machado U.S.A. Competition Team winning the Nationals twice and also receiving a Gold and Silver medal in the 1997 Joe Moriera Internationals.

Coach Jamie Percival has been in the health and fitness industry for over 14 years with a focus on boxing training. He learned and trained out of the famous Kevin Barry Boxing Gym in Auckland, New Zealand. Kevin trained some great fighters including Joseph Parker, Izu Ugonoh, Robbie Peden, David Tua and Maselino Masoe, just to name a few.

Jamie has adopted some of the best training techniques in the sport of boxing. He has built up his reputation as a boxing and fitness trainer over the years and with his experience, is excited to pass on that knowledge to his students regardless of their goals.

Coach Jamie specialises and focuses deeply on boxing technique, boxing conditioning and the necessary fundementals of the sweet science. He loves training groups as well and one-on-one’s from beginners all the way through to advanced and competition level.

A lot of people looking from the outside in, misunderstand the sport. Not knowing how combat-type training isn’t just for competition. Its self-defence, its helping build characteristics like discipline, commitment, focus and many others. And through expanding my knowledge in the industry, I will continue to share it forward with teaching the art of Muay Thai and also work as the Strength and Power Development Coach of Combat Athletes.

Since starting Muay Thai,Romeo Apines Jnr has been given the opportunity to be mentored by some of the best coaches and fighters in the industry, 2x Australian Champion Erik Miskle, ‘The Timorese Assassin’ Albert Xavier and long time veteran coach Laos Toohey. He has taken what they’ve taught him, and applied it into the ring as well as sharing that knowledge forward to others regardless if they are a beginner or a professional.

Romeo is a passionate coach who focuses on fundamental and advanced techniques in one-on-one or group classes. He gives positive and constructive advice based on your level of experience.

Jade Kerr

KIDS BJJ COACH, Yoga Studio Manager / Teacher

Jade has been involved in different sports and activities since she could walk. She played netball and AFL up until she suffered multiple knee injuries. After having a knee reconstruction, she was hesitant to return to these sports and found herself boxing at a local gym for rehabilitation. After exposure to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, she turned her focus there and didn’t look back. She now teaches and practices yoga to compliment her training.

  • Multiple gold medals in BJJ tournaments at both white and blue belt nationally and internationally including IBJJF 4 x gold medalist Florence Open and silver medalist at the Asian Open
