Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling-based martial art based on controlling and resisting your opponent resulting in submission. Control is generally easier on the ground and much of the technique of BJJ is centered around taking an opponent down and wrestling for dominant control positions thus rendering your opponent harmless. These skills are used to subdue and control an opponent with whatever level of severity the student chooses. Your BJJ journey is physically and mentally demanding however students benefit greatly from increased physical fitness, problem-solving ability, self-knowledge of their body and mind and the many social benefits of working within a large group of like-minded peers. Not to mention Jiu Jitsu is fun.
Coaches Peter Hatton and Romeo Alpines Jnr run our Muay Thai program. Muay Thai, which translates to Thai Boxing or Kick Boxing, is a system of combat that is over 4 centuries old. During ancient times, the Thai people developed Muay Thai as a dominating and combative system to be used against the enemies from other nations. At that time, Muay Thai was time tested and proven effective by the ancient warriors of Siam. Around the early 1920’s, Thai Boxing evolved into a modern day sport, similar to boxing you would see on TV, and today is known as Thailand’s national sport. Muay Thai teaches the student or fighter to use their most effective natural weapons; fists, knees, elbows and legs.

Head boxing coach Franco Valenzuela’s classes cater to all levels of experience and fitness making this class one of the most popular at our club. The boxing class consists of technical training and instruction, some pad or bag work with some conditioning drills mixed in throughout the class. Mixed Martial Arts, or MMA, is a term used to refer to a combat sport that combines the elements of many fighting styles into one all-inclusive sport. MMA has rapidly gained popularity in the U.S. and around the world, and it is often referred to as “the world’s fastest growing sport”. The roots of MMA date back to the ancient Greeks and the early Olympic sport of Pankration, in which combatants faced each other with very few rules. Similar sports evolved in many different places over time, often with the goal of pitting one traditional martial arts style against another. This class combines elements of Boxing, Muay Thai, Wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with the focus primarily on drilling, basic techniques and fight conditioning.

Personal and Private Training offers students an opportunity to work with a coach in a one-on-one, personalized training session. These sessions allow the coach to focus directly on the student’s needs or interests, at a pace that is comfortable and effective for the student. Private lessons are available for all disciplines taught at John Donehue Jiu Jitsu & MMA including one-on-one strength and conditioning sessions. Sessions are scheduled at the convenience of the student and instructor, making them an excellent option for students with busy or difficult schedules.
